X-Files - "The Lost Art of Forehead Sweat" - Season 11 Episode 4 Review

Once again it seems as though we have taken a detour from the season’s main plot. To be honest, I didn’t mind. I found this episode to be quite entertaining. I liked the feel of it and found it very humorous. It parodied so many conspiracy theories, the main one being the Mandela effect. And the way they pulled that off was priceless! I really enjoyed the crossover with the guy who plays Richard from People of Earth. He is the spastic one of the Alien abduction support group in that show, and that same spastic energy crossed over to the X-files. The idea that neither Mulder nor Scully remember him as their partner was too funny to me. Even his name could be a play off of the Mandela effect: Richard and Reggie are quite close. Regardless, the lighthearted way they poked fun at all the internet conspiracy theorists throughout the episode was amusing.

I have seen many similar discussions from the episode on all corners of the internet. Many of the conspiracy theorists even make the same arguments. They claim Mandela effects are caused by parallel universes, corporate and/or government mind control, alien cover ups… you know the stuff. Honestly, I could fall down that rabbit hole for hours. Once you start reading up on it all, it’s pretty hard to walk away. And there are so many people who make the same claims from all parts of the world; it’s insane. Hard to know what the true root of the phenomenon is, but I find it quite interesting regardless. It would be pretty cool if perhaps there was some truth to the parallel universe theory, as that seems to be the only benevolent answer. Or is it that the answer is so simple people don’t even want to believe it? Could it just be a simple answer of statistics? Given the large population of the world it wouldn’t be out of the realm of the possibility for large populations to share similar misinformation, thus creating doubt. Honestly, I like to take the stance of: I can’t rule anything out without proof. I can’t say one way or the other, I can however admit it’s quite strange.

I absolutely agree with Dr. They though; you don’t need some complex machine to manipulate the masses. All you need is the internet and one naysayer to help create doubt. At that point human nature will most definitely takeover. Fake news, conspiracies, silly memes, they all spread like wildfire on the internet. 99.9% of the time people won’t take the time to actually read past the headlines of things let alone dig into the research of what is being said. It’s so easy to use this to your advantage if you wish to spread a message, and that’s kind of scary. People are far too impressionable… but that’s a rant for another day.

There were so many funny moments in this episode for me. I absolutely loved the silly 50’s version of an alien. The speech said alien made at the end of the episode was a great social commentary, as was most of the episode. I can’t say if I were an alien I wouldn’t have said the same. Humans aren’t always the most compassionate or empathetic of creatures and we tend to destroy. I would ban humans from coming to my planet or universe too. Like Scully said, they just don’t like us. Scully also made a great point at the end. It’s important to sometimes just take things as they are and remember how things were. It’s so easy to get swept up in the insanity that is going on all over the internet and the world around us. I really appreciated this lighthearted approach to all of it though. It’s really fun watching them have so much fun with the revival and not make it all so serious. That’s one of the best things about David Duchovny, he is great with his delivery. I can’t wait for next week! It seems we will be getting a lot more answers about William.

The Path- "De Rerum Natura" - Season 3 Episode 4 Review

By Kaylynn Kasandra

This episode has me feeling so many things. If I were to be completely honest, the thing that concerns me most is how they are trying to make Creepy Cal likeable. We learned in the past seasons that Steve wasn’t the gloriously perfect leader the Meyerists like to believe. Cal has slowly come to terms with Steve’s inappropriate behavior towards him while he was growing up. To the outside world, Cal was the golden boy and apple of Steve’s eye, but things were far more sinister behind closed doors. Even if you’re not a fan of Cal, this is very hard to stomach. I can see how he became the sociopathic creep that we see now.

I am nearly a thousand percent sure that Cal isn’t being sincere in his new developing relationship with Eddie. I think it’s pretty clear by Cal’s past behavior that his manipulation has no bounds. I think all the nice things he has said about, as well as to, Eddie is playing into whatever plan he has for his takeover. And to be quite honest, while he was using his own trauma to blackmail Vera I had a hunch she was his abuser’s daughter. She isn’t actually invested in the religion of the movement, but her reaction was quite defensive of Steve. Thus, giving me confirmation before the actual reveal came later in the episode.

We were also able to see that the creepy bondage punishment that Sara has been so obsessed with was filmed in its early stages. And who was the one being punished in the film? None other than the founder of Meyerism himself, Steve. Proof that even he knew of his unnatural and inappropriate urges before inflicting them upon Cal. And it seems that Lilith, Vera’s mom, was the one trying to help him resist such urges. Even if she claims she never knew what the urge actually was. But the bombshell I found most interesting in all this was Sara’s mom’s claims that Lilith was a basketcase. I have a feeling that the comment she made is foreshadowing things to come. It could very well be linked to Eddie and Cal’s shared vision of the Meyerist bodies seen in the woods. Let’s hope that Vera grows a pair and abandons whatever crazy her mom may be a part of.

We see some other plot developments start this episode as well. It seems as though the interfaith leadership connection Joy made isn’t what she thought. The guy who she was giving goo-goo eyes to was doing the same to Hawk?! I have to say that really surprised me. I didn’t catch any clues leading up to that at all. It seems that Hawk didn’t either, but it’s hard to say if he is into it or not. We see him stand up for Joy and tell loverboy that it was not cool for him to ghost his dear old cousin the way he did. But, was that just his way of channeling his aggravation from not being able to speak to him alone about that kiss they shared? I guess we are going to have to wait on that. Meanwhile poor Joy seems to be approaching a serious rough patch between her broken heart and now her parents impending broken marriage. It should be interesting if this is what finally opens her eyes to the world the way Hawk’s have been opened.

Overall, I am not sure things will be very positive for the Meyerists this season. All the secrets and skeletons in everyone's closet are going to be exposed. It seems as though Sara is finally seeing things for what they are and not the rose colored way she was brought up. It’s been interesting to see her and Eddie swap positions this season. I still don’t think her relationship with the professor is going to work in her favor though. She is way too trusting of this guy. She all but told him Meyerism’s biggest secret. The idea that movement could quite possibly have been built on lies and as she put it, “the urges of a sick man”. Yikes. This is not going to end well. I fear that Eddie will be addressing this scandal a lot sooner than anyone thought. Or God forbid, Cal uses Eddie’s new position as his son’s “spiritual father” against him. I would not put it past creepy Cal to accuse Eddie of doing the very thing that Steve did to him. I really hope I’m wrong about that.

Star Trek: Discovery - "Vaulting Ambition" - Season 1 Episode 12 Review

By Jarman Day-Bohn

Source: CBS

With this episode and the last, we now have two major reveals exposed: Ash Tyler is somehow Voq, and Captain Lorca is actually from the mirror universe. If you are like me, you may have already had those reveals spoiled for you in the form of fan theories from various Star Trek forums and podcasts. If you don’t over-expose yourself to those, then you might have been very surprised by these twists and turns.

Source: CBS

Even though I already guessed these surprises, I still found them very satisfying due to the extremely tight writing, but even more because of the excellent performances. Jason Isaacs is a solid veteran performer, and both Sonequa Martin-Green and Shazad Latif as Michael Burnham and Ash Tyler/Voq respectively continue to surprise me. Martin-Green really has come into her own as an actress this season, and since she really has to be the audience surrogate for all these surprises, it’s a tough job to constantly give us satisfying performances of the depth of these reveals. And Latif really makes me feel the transition between tortured Tyler into a truly frightening Voq.

Source: CBS

Each and every character has been developed more and more over this season so far, with the exception of Keyla Detmer (played by Emily Coutts, the officer with the damaged face from the battle of the binary stars, with the cool half fade haircut), but they keep giving her more and more screen time, hinting that she will be more important and prominent later on in the series. I am saddened that Stamets has spent so long in a state of coma/insanity, because I miss his firey personality in relation to the other characters. And of course, along with that, we have the loss of Culber, who does actually return in this episode in the form of a vision in Stamets’ clouded brain. I am hoping, along with so many other fans out there, that Culber still returns to the show in some capacity, whether it be through some weird time travel loophole or via his Mirror Universe counterpart. If they can pull it off organically somehow that the Mirror Universe Culber permanently joins the Prime Universe Discovery crew and once again falls in love with Stamets, I will be a very happy man, but I know this would be difficult to happen without feeling forced.

Source: CBS

Speaking of loopholes, I am wondering how they plan to retcon many inconsistencies already taking place in the timeline of this show with the rest of Star Trek canon. Included in this is 1) There is no mention or repercussions of Starfleet ever having a spore drive in shows that take place after this one, and 2) Starfleet seems to be completely unaware of the Mirror Universe when it “first” shows up in the original series, which takes place after this. So…either some weird time travel stuff goes down to where none of this ever happened, or they get back to the Prime Universe and Starfleet keep all these activities and the spore drive completely under wraps in such a top secret fashion that Kirk and his crew would not be told of it even when they report their Mirror Universe activities back to Starfleet Command. I really do hope they come up with some explanation for all this, otherwise that would feel just a bit lazy to me, and a bit of a cheat to true fans out there. I really would only take one line of explanatory dialog to retcon it and I’d be happy with it.

Source: CBS

I should also mention the reveal of Captain Georgiou being the Emperor in the mirror universe. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I really didn’t care that much about that reveal. I know that story-wise that makes this more complicated between her and Michael Burnham because of their close relationship in the Prime Universe, but I really just am not riveted by Michelle Yeoh’s acting, and I just don’t buy her as this all powerful Emperor. For some reason, I think I would have enjoyed it more if Admiral Cornwell was the Emperor instead. But, c'est la vie.

So! Where is the Prime Universe Lorca? Dead? And I’m confused…so Ash Tyler was a real guy? Does that mean that Voq’s actual body is gone? But they said they reduced his bones…so did they get rid of the original Ash and just overlay his memories and take his face…off? What is the ISS Discovery up to in the Prime Universe if they did indeed switch places? What is Mirror Universe’s Lorca’s grand plan? Hopefully we find out the answers to this and more on next week’s Star Trek: Discovery! Let me know what you thought of the episode in the comments below!
