Free Game of the Week 2 - Hearthstone

February 26, 2016

If Magic the Gathering and World of Warcraft could produce a child; Hearthstone would be it. With just over 40 MILLION players, Hearthstone is leading the way in online strategy card games. With the newest expansion “The Grand Tournament” being released last August, it became the second expansion with many more to come, including one set to be released in the spring of this year.

So what exactly is Hearthstone and how do I play?

Source: Blizzard

Hearthstone is a turn based strategy card game between two players. The objective of the game is to drain your opponent's life points, while maintaining your own. Before you start your matchmaking journey, you must first select a character to play and a deck to use. Once you’ve entered a match both players are given three random cards to which they can keep or discard in exchange for new cards. Then one player is randomly chosen to go first. The other player receives a card that allows the user to get an extra mana crystal to balance out the first play advantage. Once the game is underway both players start with one mana crystal, and each turn the amount of crystals goes up by one until a maximum of ten is possessed. The more mana crystals you possess, the more powerful the card you can put into play.

What characters can I choose from?

From druids to warriors, paladins to warlocks, Hearthstone has everything a fantasy lover could ask for.  If you’re a fan of the Warcraft series you’ll notice some familiar faces including Thrall and Jaina. With nine different heroes to choose from, each with a unique skill and play style, Hearthstone is jam-packed full of hours of thought-inducing strategies and careful planning before the game even starts.

What kind of cards are there and what do they do?

Cards are broken down into three categories, you have minion cards, spell cards, and weapons. You use minion cards to summon minions to aid you in battle. Minions have both attack and life points and attack at the start of your next turn after summoning it, but are killed when their life points reach zero. Now minion cards can do a variety of things when summoned, from having a charge attack which lets you attack immediately, to buffing allies adjacent to it. Spell cards are fairly straightforward. Whatever the card says, that’s what it does. A fireball that deals four damage to all minions, will deal damage to all minions; no fancy trickery is involved. A weapon card allows the hero to gain an attack as if it were a minion and attack the other hero or his minions. However, any damage taken will be deduced from your hero’s life points, so be cautious.

Do I get all the cards? How do I get more?

Source: Blizzard

You start off with some basic cards, but most cards are gathered through booster packs. Booster packs are a package of five random cards. You can get them one of two ways. The first is by simply paying actual money; each costing $0.99. Another method is by completing in game quests for gold, and gold can be exchanged for booster packs as well. The last method of acquiring cards is a bit different than the others. With this method you take the cards you do not want, and turn them into powder. With the powder you can make specific cards. So if you’re looking for that perfect card, this is your best bet!

What’s the community like?

With thousands of viewers on Twitch, and many online guides and forums, Hearthstone has, without a doubt, a thriving and rich community. Also be sure to check out the Hearthstone e-sports scene with the prize pools are up to $250,000!

Overall

Whether you rather sitting down for a few quick games or spending hours theory-crafting the best deck and strategy, Hearthstone is for you. While each game takes only about 15 minutes you’ll soon find the hours flying by. Also be sure to check out the mobile version. Just like the computer version mobile Hearthstone is free and easy to use! So be sure to check out Hearthstone free on Battle.net, and I’ll see you on the battlefield!

Free Game of the Week 1 - Dota 2

February 17, 2016

Free Game Of The Week focuses on finding the best games for the best price of zero dollars! This week's game is Dota 2 (Defence of The Ancients). But just what is Dota 2? Originally released by Valve in July of 2013, Dota 2 has quickly become one of the most popular games in computer gaming. With over 7 MILLION players and thousands of viewers on Twitch daily, it’s clear that Dota 2 is something special. But what exactly is Dota 2?

What is Dota 2 and how do I play?

All the heroes to choose from. - Source: Valve

Dota 2 is an Action RPG (Role Playing Game), a RTS (Real Time Strategy) and a MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) all rolled into one. Highly competitive and addicting, Dota 2 is both a very simple and very complex game, with two teams of five selecting characters or “Heroes” and entering the game. Once in the game the objective is simple: destroy the enemy base or “Ancient”. To do so, you must be powerful. To become powerful you must gain gold and experience. Gold is gained in three ways passively as the game progresses: by killing units or “creeps” and by killing enemy Heroes. With gold you can buy items which makes these things easier. At the end of the game, win or lose, you return to matchmaking and search for another, and the cycle repeats itself.  With over 109 heroes and over 100 items to choose from Dota 2 is a unique and interesting experience every time.

Types of Heroes

From fuzzy cuddly bears, knights, and even demons Dota 2 has it all. Dota heroes are broken down into 3 categories: You have strong testosterone-driven strength heroes such as Axe; cunning agility heroes like Drow Ranger; and magical spellcasters like Crystal Maiden. Each Hero is equipped with four to six unique abilities that can be used to alter and affect the tides of battle.

What if I wanted to pay money?

In Dota you receive all the heroes and all the content for free. Everything that costs money is purely cosmetic, and the cosmetic factors have no effect on gameplay. While some cosmetics cost upwards of $300, it is purely for looks.

Is Dota 2 played professionally?

Dota 2 is played by both professional and amateurs alike. With so many tournaments going on, it feels as if Dota 2 is always being played. As far as big tournaments  go, The International 5, which is sort of a grand championship, just finished in late July, 2015. The winning team "Evil Geniuses" won just over 5 MILLION dollars.

Aside from the many hours you will put into normal Dota 2, Valve recently released workshop tools that allow its many users the ability to create games and maps, all of which are playable in the arcade menu. With infinite game modes and games, Dota 2 is sure to keep you entertained for many hours. So go out, and be sure to grab four of your friends, and get ready for a time of excitement and wonder, with Dota 2, available on Steam.

The Seven Sins of League of Legends by Justin Paul

May 10, 2015

League of Legends is one of my favorite and most-played games. Combining real-time strategy, item building, and perpetual action, it’s an easy game to become addicted to. As fun as League is, however, I’ve found that certain groups of people, i.e.”sinners”, have a habit of ruining games for others, and sometimes themselves. Here are just a few of the sinners that I’ve had the unfortunate experience of running into (and at times, become)

1. The Lagger (Sloth)

“A summoner has disconnected.”

- Announcer

A decent connection to the internet isn’t so much to ask for, right? In a game where teams are made up only of 5 people and matches regularly last up to and over an hour, dial-up just isn’t going to cut it. Even if The Lagger manages to reconnect halfway through the game, the team has already lost towers on the top and bottom lanes. Coming back from that isn’t easy, if you can come back at all.

Even worse than that is if your team is on the winning streak and is taking down towers left and right. As soon as you start to feel a breeze of confidence... “A summoner has disconnected”...

2. The Diver (Lust)

“Worth!”

-The Diver

The Diver is a player who can’t resist bloodlust. That sliver of red above the weakened foe drives the Diver into a frenzy, foregoing any sanity in his mind for the opportunity at an extra kill. Now to be fair, the temptation is great. And let’s be honest; they can easily get back out of range of the tower without dying. No problem, right?

Well, not if the team takes that action as “Oh, we’re going in!” and, in doing so, it leads to mass confusion, wasted “R’s”, and a high probability of enemy pentakills. Not “worth.”

3. The Rager (Wrath)

“Seriously? Can you guys feed more? Go back to bots! $*%!!!”

-The Rager

This sin actually spans across all the realms and genres of gaming. But besides Call of Duty, the biggest amount of Ragers I've run into is definitely in League. While rage-quitting isn’t a common endgame with the Rager in LoL, the non-stop tirade of insults and complaining will make you wish they did. I’ve never run into so many people who can creatively curse you out. Poets of profanity, I’d say.

4. The Feeder (Gluttony)

“Sorry, I misclicked”

-The Feeder

Dying isn’t a problem. Dying a few times isn’t a big deal. But when your score starts looking like 0/9/3, you need to rethink your PvP game. Granted, everyone has had to start somewhere. That place is in Co-op vs. AI.

Personally, I spent quite a bit of time in bot matches before I decided to move onto the big leagues. Why? Because I knew that making too many mistakes and feeding the other team kills would be reasonable grounds to have my team give me an earful. Even before trying new champions or strategies, it’s best to work them out in game modes that aren’t taken as seriously and you’re less at-risk to have a new one ripped into you.

5. The Lane Caller (Envy)

“Bot or feed!”

-The Lane Caller

Calling your lane at the character selection screen isn’t a big deal. It’s pretty much expected in most cases. The problem, however, comes when one person is so dead-set on their position, that they resort to trolling, complaining (i.e. The Rager), or just quitting altogether, forcing other players to find another match. Soon they’ll be calling lanes in ARAM...

6. The Braggarts (Pride)

“My arms are tired from all this carrying”

-The Braggart

Like owning a pitbull with a muzzle, the Braggarts are a great addition to the team, making plays, pushing lanes, and leading their respective teams to a decisive victory. Except they don’t have a muzzle. They have a megaphone. And if they don’t think you're pulling your own weight, they're not afraid to let you know. This is probably the sinner that gets the most attention for giving League a bad name for its community attitude.

7. The Kill Thief (Greed)

“I saw you were full health and needed help with that near-dead champion, so here I am!”

-Kill Thief

I HATE when my kills are stolen. I don’t mean being in a 2v2 top-lane skirmish and my partner happens to get both kills while I’m left with two assists. I mean when I’ve spent a good few minutes whittling down the health on Morgana, and as soon as I go in for the kill a jungling Ragnar comes out and takes her down. Without a word he heads back into the jungle, almost expecting a thank you for all the help he provided. Come on dude, really?
